Class of 2020, A new Athletic Dynasty for Cardinal Hayes?

by dario vasquez '20

The Freshman class at Cardinal Hayes High School has already shown remarkable athletic potential. During their first year of high school they have already made their mark in four sports: Football, Soccer, Basketball and Baseball.

The Cardinal Hayes Varsity Football and Soccer teams both earned Division championships. The football team went on to the state championship and did remarkably well in that game despite a loss, and the soccer team won the city championship! What makes both teams’ accolades even more impressive is that both teams consisted of freshmen - freshmen who were key components in their team's success.

The freshmen basketball and football teams have already made their mark in their respective leagues with winning percentages, demonstrating their potential for future years. Freshman basketball finished their season with an outstanding 20-2, and freshman football with an impressive 7-1. The J.V. football and J.V. basketball teams next year will be solid with these 2020 athletes on board.

The Hayes J.V.  baseball team had a decent fall season, facing off against premier programs in the Bronx and New Rochelle. The team held their ground during each game and never stopped fighting until the final out. What makes this so special is the fact that this team is made up of mostly freshmen, as eight of the starting nine will graduate Cardinal Hayes in 2020. The fact that these students have been competing with and even dominating elite prospects that are a year older just shows how special this baseball team will become.

When asked about his insight on this topic, Mr. Craig Joseph, Assistant Principal for Enrollment and Sports Management, has said he’s very excited about the potential for Cardinal Hayes Freshman athletes being a dominating force in football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. He feels we will be known as having the best athletic programs in our borough, city, and even state. And to think we all originating from the freshman class graduating in 2020, potentially starting an athletic dynasty in Cardinal Hayes High School.
